Wheatley

Sandra Jones Stafford, of Wheatley, Kentucky, passed away on September 30, 2021. She died peacefully at her home in Fairhope, Alabama, surrounded by family.

Sandy was born on November 29, 1939, at Lay Dam in Clanton, Alabama, to Grace Evans Jones and Joseph Curtis Jones. She was the beloved wife of Jerry Norman Stafford until his death in 2019. Sandy and Jerry were avid Kentucky basketball fans, and enjoyed many adventures with their friends following the Cats around the world and at home. She and her husband were generous supporters of “The Blast,” an annual fundraiser affiliated with UK Basketball, benefitting children’s charities, as well as serving on the organizational committee. She travelled extensively, both for pleasure and for charitable purposes, making multiple trips to Africa with Worldwide Hearts and Hands. She also generously supported Dallasburg Baptist Church and Long Ridge Baptist Church in more ways than can be counted.

Together with her husband, Sandy owned Growers Tobacco Warehouse (where she worked as business manager for 25 years) and other tobacco warehouses in Carrollton and North Carolina. Among other ventures, Jerry and Sandy owned J & S Farms, a corporation that acquired farmland in Owen and surrounding counties, improving it for farm use or developing it for residential use. Over the years, she also acquired and managed investment rental properties.

Sandy was a loving wife and mother and took great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed a full life and will be missed by many. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a grandson, Evan Rees Kever. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Baxter Williams (Tommy) of Wheatley and Tami Baxter Kever of Versailles; four grandchildren, Margaret Williams Bond (Colin) of Lexington, Joseph Thompson Williams (Desiree) of Wheatley, Samuel Curtis Kever of Lexington, and Anderson Rees Kever of Lexington; two great-grandchildren, AnnaKate Rae Williams of Wheatley and William Warren Bond of Lexington; and a brother, William Evans Jones (Sandy) of Clinton, Mississippi.

Due to Covid concerns and restrictions, funeral services were private. A graveside service was held at Owenton Cemetery with Pastors Pat Butcher and Roger Alford officiating.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
