William Dean Ping, of Sparta, KY, a cherished member of the community and a dedicated servant in law enforcement, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 22, 2026, in Edgewood, Kenton County Kentucky. Born on February 3, 1961, in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, William's life was one marked by a commitment to serving others and making a positive impact in his community.
William's career in law enforcement began after he graduated from the Eastern Kentucky Law Enforcement Academy in Richmond, KY. He served in various capacities before retiring as the Police Chief of Sparta, where he was honored in 2001 as the National Police Chief of the Year. Before his tenure as a police chief, he was the Gallatin County Jailer from 1990 to 1995 and also worked for several years as an E.M.T. with the Gallatin County Ambulance Service. Earlier in his life, William held positions in the construction industry and worked as a truck driver, showcasing his hard work and versatility throughout his career.
Beyond his professional achievements, William was known for his selflessness and dedication to his colleagues. He often volunteered to work holidays, allowing his fellow officers to spend quality time with their families. His kindness and generosity will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
In his leisure time, William found joy in tinkering with automobiles, tractors, and lawn mowers and had a passion for building miniature model cars. He attended Ghent Baptist Church.
William is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steven (Alicia) Ping of Sparta, KY; his brother, Bobby Lee Ping of Sparta, KY; his sisters, Melba Jean Wheeler of Sparta, KY, and Theresa Lynn Ping of Glencoe, KY; and his beloved grandchildren, Kyndra, Elijah, and Noah Ping of Sparta, KY. His companion, Tammy Parsons, and his faithful dog, Jack, were also an important part of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elisha and Helen Doris Floyd Ping; his wife, Denise K. Welch Ping; his sister, Reba Gail Robinson; and his brothers, Tommy Edward Ping and Michael Glenn Ping.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Ghent Baptist Church, located at 205 Ferry St., Ghent, KY 41045.
William Dean Ping lived a life devoted to service, family, and community. His legacy will continue through the lives he touched, and the memories cherished by his family and friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
