Walter Sutherland, Jr., formerly of Worthville, KY, passed away on December 6, 2025, at the age of 94 in Warsaw, Gallatin County, Kentucky, after a brief illness. Born on September 26, 1931, in Carroll County, he dedicated his life to not only serving his country but also serving his community through his work as a barber and his passion for farming.
Walter proudly served in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant before receiving his honorable discharge. Following his military service, he pursued a career in barbering by attending Barber College in Louisville, KY. He co-owned "The Corner Barber Shop" in Carrollton with Les Tomlinson, where he became well-known for his friendly demeanor and skillful haircuts, creating a welcoming space for many in the area.
In addition to his barbering career, Walter found joy in farming. He passionately raised crops and tobacco, and he particularly loved working in the garden, canning the produce he cultivated. His love for nature extended to leisurely walks along the riverbank, where he enjoyed searching for arrowheads. Throughout his life, Walter was an avid animal lover and took great pleasure in raising German shepherds.
He had been a member of Carrollton Wesleyan Church for many years.
Walter's greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He treasured visits from his daughters, Pamela and Dr. Dave Miller of Carrollton, KY, and Kimberly and Daniel Wright of Worthville, KY. Walter was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, Heather Johnson, Chris Olivigni, Roman Wright, Amanda Cattlet, and Angie Davis, and he delighted in the company of his eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Family gatherings were special occasions for Walter, even if he sometimes found himself dozing off before they concluded.
Walter is preceded in death by his loving parents, Walter Sutherland and Lena Krohn Sutherland; his beloved wife, Joann Sutherland, who passed on November 22, 2007; and two sisters, Virginia Howard and Marjorie Wilson.
His warmth and gentle spirit will be remembered by all who knew him. A visitation will be held in his honor on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM. Burial will conclude at the Worthville Cemetery with Military Honors being presented by the Carrollton American Legion Post #41 and the United States Army Honor Guard.
Walter’s legacy will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Carroll County Animal Shelter in care of the funeral home.
Arrangements have been entrusted with the Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.
