Listen to Obituary

Tommy W. Unker, age 71, of Carrollton, Carroll County, Kentucky, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, while working on his beloved farm. Born on Tuesday, September 21, 1954, in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana, Tommy lived a life marked by dedication, kindness, and commitment to his family.

A proud graduate of Carroll County High School in the Class of 1973, Tommy carried his values and determination into a long and respected career. He spent 35 years working in the Mechanical Maintenance Department at Kentucky Utilities Ghent Generating Station, retiring in 2017.

Some of Tommy's greatest enjoyments were spending time on the family farm raising tobacco and hay over the years.  Early in life in the 1970's during his high school days he had opened a radiator repair shop, of which the building was still a place for him to sneak off to occasionally.

Tommy was a faithful member of the Carrollton Masonic Lodge #134 F & A.M., having served as past master of the lodge in 1988.  He had formerly served on the Carroll County School Board from November 2, 2004, to December 31, 2012, also having served as past chairman.

Above all, Tommy cherished his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Charlotte Earls Unker, who was his steadfast companion throughout their years together.  They were married on September 20, 1986, behind the Masterson House on the River in Carrollton.  He leaves behind his two sons, Luke Unker of Mount Vernon, KY, and Eli Unker of Walton, KY, as well as his daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Kylie, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Tommy's strong bonds extended to his siblings and wider family. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Ruth Ann Unker; his brother, Roger Unker, and his sister-in-law, Christi. His nieces, Anabel Unker and Allie Unker, along with Matt Strader, also survive him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Unker, Jr. and Virginia Giesler Unker, whose values of integrity and care for others clearly lived on in Tommy throughout his life.

To those who knew him, Tommy was more than a hardworking man; he was someone who took pride in his roots, cared deeply for his family, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His sudden loss is deeply felt by all who loved and respected him.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of Tommy's life on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, located at 809 Highland Ave, Carrollton, KY 41008. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 4:00 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Carrollton Masonic Lodge #134 F & A.M. in care of the funeral home.

Tommy W. Unker’s legacy of devotion, integrity, and kindness will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will remain a cherished blessing to his family, friends, and community.
