Thelma Jean Butcher, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026, in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. Born on Saturday, September 16, 1933, in Sparta, Gallatin County, Kentucky, Thelma led a life marked by devotion, both to her family and to her many community commitments.
A cherished homemaker for many years, Thelma’s spirit extended far beyond the bounds of her home. She devoted significant time to jail ministry and nursing home ministry, touching countless lives with her compassion and steadfast faith. She was also honored as one of the original members of the Family Worship Center in Carrollton, Kentucky, a testament to her enduring commitment to her church and community.
Thelma’s personal passions reflected her artistic soul and nurturing nature. She loved to draw, paint, engage in crafts, and cultivate her garden—activities that brought joy not only to herself but to all who were fortunate to witness her creative talents.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Peggy Black (Vernon Robert) of Campbellsburg, Kentucky, and her son, Reverend Steve Butcher (Debbie) of Vevay, Indiana. Thelma’s legacy continues through her four grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, who were a source of immense pride and happiness in her life.
Thelma was preceded in death by her loving parents, Tommy and Minnie Kate Keith Hughes; her husband, William F. Butcher; her sisters, Lucille Bickers and Sue Johnson; and her brother, Curtis Hughes.
Family, friends, and all who knew Thelma are invited to pay their respects at the Family Worship Center located at 2520 KY-227, Carrollton, Kentucky. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., followed immediately by the funeral service 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the Owenton Cemetery in Owenton, KY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Family Worship Center in care of the funeral home.
Thelma Jean Butcher’s life spoke profoundly of love, dedication, and kindness. She leaves behind a rich heritage of faith and family cherished by all who were privileged to know her. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those she so deeply touched.
