Shirley Jean (Reynolds) Whalen, a cherished figure in her community and a beloved educator, passed away on August 28, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on March 12, 1938, in Worthville, Kentucky, she dedicated her life to the betterment of others, particularly through her longstanding career as a school teacher. A proud graduate of Pikeville College, Shirley touched the lives of countless students with her passion for learning and commitment to education.
Shirley was a devoted mother to her children, who will carry her memory and legacy forward. She is survived by her daughter, Autum Whalen (Thomas) Singleton, of Miramar Beach, Florida; and her sons, Logan E. (Sandra) Whalen, of Norman, Oklahoma; John D. (Rebecca) Whalen, of Columbia, South Carolina; and Ralph W. (JoAnn) Whalen, also of Columbia, South Carolina. Her love and guidance will be profoundly missed by them all.
Shirley was preceded in death by several beloved family members. She was the daughter of Edward Frederick Reynolds and Essie B Stewart Reynolds. Her husband, Logan Dean Whalen, and her brother, William Edward "Jiggs" Reynolds, have also passed before her.
Residing at the time of her passing in Miramar Beach, Florida, Shirley’s life was characterized by her unwavering strength and dedication. Those who knew her will remember her not just for her contributions as a teacher, but also for the warmth, wisdom, and love she offered to her family and friends throughout her life. Her spirit and the impact she made will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she has left behind.
She was a wonderful mother to us and a great wife to our father. She deeply loved her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and friends that she met along her journey through a beautiful life.She had an energetic spirit and was loved by all who knew her. We will miss her very much.
