Patsy Massey

August 3, 1932 — June 24, 2016

Patsy Jean Knigga Massey departed this life on June 24, 2016 at Signature Healthcare of Carrollton. She was born to John Oscar and Mary B. Wilson Knigga in Ghent KY on August 3, 1932. She attended Ghent Elementary School where she was valedictorian of her eighth grade class, and Carrollton High School where she was valedictorian of her 1950 graduation class. She made a profession of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized at an early age and became recommitted to that relationship later in life. She attended Eastern Kentucky College (later Eastern Kentucky University) for two years and went to Louisville KY for summer work. She enjoyed the money and decided not to return to college. While in Louisville, she renewed acquaintance with Ken, her future husband, who was attending seminary and working as a janitor in an old downtown Baptist church. The pastor asked Ken if he knew of someone to teach a girls Sunday School class and Patsy agreed to do it.. She ended up playing the organ for the church also. Patsy married Mitchell Kenneth Massey on March 21,1954. They had three children, Mary Diane, Michael David and Karen Sue. Patsy served in various volunteer positions in the churches in which her husband served as Director of Music and Education such as teaching Sunday School, leading women's organizations, playing piano for children's choir and other positions. After the death of her father, and with her mother being in poor health, Ken resigned from his church work in 1969 and they moved in with her mother into the house in Ghent where she lived as a little girl. Ken took a position as a teacher in the Carroll County School System and she a position with the Carroll County Memorial Hospital She worked at the hospital for seven years and then at Dow Corning Chemical Plant for 15 years where she was the secretary in the Quality Assurance Department until her retirement.

After moving to Ghent, she became active in the Ghent Baptist Church, teaching an adult Sunday School class participating in the Women's Missionary Union and playing the piano for children's choir. She played the piano and organ at the church for thirty years until failing eyesight forced her to retire. After their retirement, Patsy and Ken visited their children and grandchildren and visited all 50 of the United States and several Canadian Provinces. Patsy was afflicted with Alzheimer disease the latter part of her life. In March of 2008 she broke her hip and spent life after that at Green Valley Health and Rehabilitation (now Signature Health Care facility of Carrollton). She was a devoted wife and mother and a devoted follower of Christ.

Patsy is survived by her husband and three children, Mary Diane Massey Coombs of Asheville, NC, Michael David Massey of Cincinnati OH and Karen Sue Massey McMillan of Buies Creek NC. six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
