Claudia Smith Way, a committed and dedicated teacher, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026 at the age of 74 after a long illness. She was born in Covington, Kentucky on November 7, 1951, to Paul J. and Mary Kathryn Halmess Smith. Claudia, affectionately known as ‘Miss Way’ by generations of five year olds who began their educational journey in her kindergarten classrooms at Cartmell and Kathryn Winn Elementary Schools, worked tirelessly to create a safe, nurturing, and encouraging environment for every child. She was proud of each class and every student, a pride that was deeply affirmed when former students sought her out later in life to thank her for the lasting influence she had on them. During her summers off and well into retirement, Claudia delighted in spending time outdoors—whether sailing, relaxing with one of her many books in a lounge chair, or tending to her flowers and plants. She was also devoted to her countless television shows, never missing an episode and always ready with a strong opinion on the latest plot twists. Her life was marked by a deep and abiding pride in her family. The close presence of her parents was a constant and grounding force, shaping her values and providing lifelong comfort and guidance. She was never without contact from her six siblings, whom she cherished deeply; their shared bond, support, and enduring connection influenced her life beyond measure. Together, they formed a foundation of love, loyalty and mutual respect that remained central to who she was. Claudia is survived by her two children, John H. (Bethany) Way, IV of Indianapolis, Indiana and Erin Way Purvis of Richmond, Kentucky. She was also a devoted and deeply proud grandmother to her ‘girls,’ Sarah and Allie Purvis, who brought her immense joy. Claudia is also survived by her three sisters; Paula (Charlie) Norris of Lexington, KY, Suzanne "Tootie" (Berry) Stewart of Indianapolis, IN and Kathy (Doug) Elam of Versailles, KY, and three brothers; Dr. John (Ellen) Smith of Ft. Mitchell, KY, Bob (Robin) Smith of Carrollton, KY and Pat (Donya) Smith of Richmond, KY. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; Arthur Zook. In accordance with Claudia’s wishes, no services are planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll County Food Pantry, in care of Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home.

Claudia will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her lifelong commitment to nurturing young minds, and the outward strength and kindness that defined her character. Her influence lives on through the countless students she guided and the family she cherished. Though she will be deeply missed, her legacy of compassion and dedication will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.
